VIDEO RECORDING GUIDELINES

When recording or directly capturing a golf swing we highly recommend the following:

  • Use a miniDV or Digital 8 camcorder. ( Hi-8 or S-VHS camcorders can be used if your computer has an analog video capture device.)

DVD, Hard Drive, Webcams and other type cameras can not be used to directly capture video within the programs and are not recommended for various reasons. (Video from these sources can be captured in another application, saved as a standard .AVI format file and imported into the programs. Video quality and usefulness are not assured.
  • Connect camcorder to computer via their FireWire ports/cable. (FireWire is also known as IEEE1394, Sony calls it "iLink.") Do not connect to the USB ports.

  • Observe the basics of good photography. Pay attention to proper lighting, focusing and framing. Set the lens no wider than to see the clubhead through its arc.

  • Always use a tripod. Adjust tripod legs to level camera and position it at hip height. When recording from the side, put camera directly in-line with the ball at 90 degrees to the target. When taping from the rear, face camera between the golfer's body and the target line. If possible, have golfer aim at a target which will be visible in the picture.

  • Select the fastest shutter speed lighting will allow, 1/500 minimum. If your camcorder doesn't have manual shutter-speed adjustments, use the "Sports" recording mode.

  • If your camcorder has a "Memory" mode for recording to a removable storage device, do not use it. Select Camera for a "live" direct capture and Tape to record to videocassette.

  • If your camcorder has a "Progressive Scan" mode, do not use this setting. Select Normal to record as a standard "interlaced" .AVI format file.
